Taveuni is the third largest island in Fiji, a cigar-shaped
volcanic island with forest-clad peaks running down
the spine, the narrow coastal plain fringed by palm
trees and golden beaches, turquiose waters and coral
reefs flanking the shoreline. The world famous Somosomo
Straits sweep along the north side of the island, its
swift currents cutting Taveuni off from Vanua Levu.
It is in the Somosomo Straits that can be found the
world famous Rainbow Reef, hoe to such hallowed dive
sites as the Great White Wall and Rainbow's End, which
put Fiji on the diver's map.
Set against the backdrop of a 56-acre coconut plantation,
Maravu Plantation Resort is a sumptuous hideaway where
you can escape the hustle and bustle of daily life!
Beautifully tended gardens that sweep down the hill
are the location of just 20 well- appointed traditionally
thatched bures (bungalows). Conveniently located
on the north west tip of the island, Maravu provides
easy access to the fabulous dive sites of the Somosomo
Straits. The International Dateline runs just a few
miles to the west. At Maravu you can be one of the last
people on the planet to enjoy the end of the day!
There are a variety of bure available at Maravu.
Four Planters bures in 2 units have private
verandah and en suite bathroom and an interconnecting
door that makes them ideal for families. Three Deluxe
bures have outdoor shower and jacuzzi, surrounded
by a stone wall. The five Honeymoon bures are
separate units and each has a large open sundeck and
covered verandah, an indoor and outdoor shower; similar
to the deluze bures but larger and more spacious!
Built across a small valley, and accessed by an impressive
wooden walkway amongst the treetops are the top two
classes of room. The four Honeymoon Deluxe suites are
much larger and have separate lounges and bedrooms,
a private courtyard with outside shower, sundeck and
jacuzzi. The wide verandahs have covered terraces and
spacious open sundecks. The top of the range Ocean Spa
Villas are larger even still and 3 have commanding views
of the sea, the other garden & ocean.
All the bures at Maravu have air conditioning,
but with cooling sea breezes wafting in from the Pacific
Ocean air-conditioning is only required udring the summer
months. Ceiling fans keep cool air circulating and louvred
windows allow breezes to drift in.The walls of the bures
are adorned with local Fijian artwork. There are neither
phones nor TV in the rooms, but email, phone & fax
facilities are available in the reception.
The open air restaurant is located under a long shaded
verandah with views of the gardens and the pool. The
resort has it's own organic vegetable garden producing
a range of herbs and vegetables throughout the year,
and as you wander through the landscaped you will notice
banana, mango and papaya trees bursting with fruit!
Meals are a delicious occasion, with local seafood as
fresh as it can get, choice cuts of meat from New Zealand
& Australia and a selection of fine wines from around
the world. A weekly lovo feast is offered,
where you can savour a traditional Fijian feast and
try your hand at some local dancing, having perhaps
first built up your courage by drinking an exotic cocktail
or two.
A two minute walk from the reception area is the private
beach and Swiss Fiji Divers, who offer daily dive trips
to the Rainbow Reef. Dominic & Evie and their Fijian
team have two purpose biult state of the art dive vessels
that take 8 divers on the 30 minute run to the dive
sites. A snack is provided between dives on an uninhabited
beach, where you can go snorkelling or hunt for shells
in the sand. 2 dives are offered in the morning and
an optional 3rd in the afternoon, subject to numbers
and availability. This gives you the chance to relax
in after lunch or go and enjoy Taveuni island itself.
Non-divers are excellently catered for with guided
tours, nature walks to such locations as Vidawa Forest
with its excellent bird life, Bouma and Kulanawi waterfalls
and the volcanic lake at Tagimaucia, horse riding, deep-sea
fishing, sea kayaking or just relaxing in the beautiful
surroundings of Maravu Resort.
After your stay at Maravu we defy you NOT to have a
lump in your throat as you leave! This resort is one
of the most romantic in the world, and nothing is too
much trouble for the friendly and efficient staff. In
our opinion this is the ONLY option for Taveuni!
