Misool Eco Resort is one of the most remote resorts in the world! This small eco resort is located on its own private island, Batbitim, in the southern part of Raja Ampat, 4-5 hours by boat round the corner from Sorong. The nearest resort is 150 miles away, and the nearest village is almost half a day's boat journey away!
Batbitim is to be found just off the south-east corner of Misool Island, half way between the far western tip of West Papua and the island of Maluku to the south. Surrounded by beautiful white beachs and fringed by exquisite coral reefs, the island is a haven of peace and quiet a million (figurative!) miles from anywhere. Just eleven cottages make up Misool, accommodating just 22 divers and those looking to get away from it all.
The 8 deluxe Water Cottages are built of quality wood with grass roofs on stilts over the clear waters of the islands northern lagoon, each with private veranda with steps leading down to enticing water! The verandas have a fabulous hammocks slung over the water, where you can relax between dives. The cottages have air conditioning, mini bar and a private Balinese-style bathroom, open to the elements above. Large concertina style glass doors open up on the the veranda, with commanding views of the lagoon and islands beyond.
There are also 3 Reef View Cottages, a short walk over the hill from the northern lagoon and overlooking the South Beach. These cottages are of a more simple design to the Water Cottages, but still have en suite bathrooms. South Beach is right on your doorstep
Several Deluxe Villas are currently being constructed, and will be available in late 2009.
The beach front restaurant is located on North Beach with commanding views of the lagoon. The terrace is a perfect place on which to enjoy a pre dinner drink and chat with new found friends about the day's diving. The food at Misool features locally sourced fish, meat, fruits and vegetables, served in a fusion of Indonesian and European styles. Vegetarians are well catered for. You certainly won't lose any weight at Misool!
The on site dive centre is located just yards away from the restaurant and Water Villas and each cottage is assigned it's own kit storage area for the duration of the guests' stay. Separate wet and dry areas ensure that photographic equipment only gets wet when it goes in the sea! Camera tables are provided for those who wish to tinker with their equipment; there is a television for guests to view their day's video footage and computer terminals for those taking stills. Open air fresh water showers mean you can rinse of straight after your dive.
And what of the diving? Well, it's
Raja Ampat, so it's perhaps the finest diving in the world.
Dive sites are as few as 5 minutes from the resort, or as many as 60 minutes, depending on where you want to go. Uncrowded dive boats take you off on an adventure like no other. In the waters surrounding Misool Eco Resort you can find
just about every type of tropical marine environment, from fringing reefs to coral pinnacles, deep walls and shallow patch reefs. Here you can find a bewildering array of fish, coral and invertebrate
species,
from manta rays to swirling schools of jacks and barracuda, pygmy seahorses to nudibranchs and sea fans and soft corals. This is world class
diving at its best! Three boat dives are scheduled each day, and shore dives on the house reef are also included, depending on the package you choose.
For non divers, and those looking for a break from their watery forays there are local caves, ancient petroglyphs (wall paintings), boat tours, river excursions and bird-watching tours that can be arranged on site.
Even if Misool Eco Resort wasn't situated slap bang in the middle of the world's best diving it would still be a magical place to visit. The owners have created a magical place in an exceedingly remote and pristine location. The diving just makes it that much better!
