For the scuba diver Papua New Guinea offers the greatest diversity
of seascapes in the tropics; fringing reefs that hug the sides of
islands, barrier reefs that protect calm sand-filled lagoons, coral
pinnacles sitting in immeasurably deep water, magnets for pelagic
fish and marine mammals, World War II wrecks from planes to freighters
to tanks and destroyers. The warm waters, supplied with an endless
supply of nutrients from the constant upsurge of water from the
abyssal depths that surround Papua New Guinea, provide the perfect
medium for such intense prolific coral growth that the coral reefs
of Papua New Guinea have been described as the "rainforests
of the sea". Into this mélange throw small, intimate,
dedicated dive resorts and some of worlds finest live-aboard
dive vessels and you can see why Papua New Guinea truly is diving's
frontier.
