Madang Dive Sites
Typical Itinerary

Madang has, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful settings in the entire South Pacific. Nestling within in an island-studded lagoon, surrounded by coral reefs, Madang is your typical picture postcard setting! Madang town has a number of restaurants, hotels and shops, and an excellent golf course. One of the highlights of a tour of Madang is the huge colony of fruit bats that roost in the stand of tall trees in the main square. If you want to strike up a conversation with the groups of locals that rest in the trees' cool shade, then the best thing to do is ask if they taste good! This is guarantied an enthusiastic response, though we don't recommend you take their word for it!

Up the coast from Madang, in the forest near Alexishafen, is the remains of an American B25 bomber. It is perhaps the best preserved of all plane wrecks in Papua New Guinea. It is set amongst the trees on the edge of what used to be a Japanese airstrip. This still shows through the tall scrub grass and cane that has since grown up, and bomb craters are clearly visible, strangely devoid of plant growth.

Accommodation in and around Madang is varied. We favour Jais Aben Resort, located on a private peninsula within Nagada Harbour, affording stunning views across Madang Lagoon to the islands. The resort has the quickest access to the best dive sites in Madang, most of them only a 20 minute boat ride away. Accommodation is in 18 self-contained bungalows, with private bathrooms, and with balconies looking out to sea. The central area has a beautiful swimming pool and open air restaurant. The diving facilities are set apart from the resort, and include a large jetty, dive gear room, and another open-air bar. The entire resort is set in beautifully tended gardens. The resort offers daily dive packages, with two dives in the morning and a dive in the afternoon being available. The dive boats rest at one of the many islands in Madang Harbour between the morning dives, giving you the opportunity to explore or snorkel. Alternatively, you can be ferried out to one of the islands with a packed lunch for a quiet day's relaxation all by yourself.
